New Orleans?

Question by William: New Orleans?
My friends and I are planning a road trip to New Orleans. I have a few questions, First is it safe to go? Second What are some things to do in the city? Third where is a good semi-cheap place to stay?

Answer by Barry
Crime tends to become a topic in questions about New Orleans. Use the same common sense you need in every major city in the world and there is little chance you will be a victim of anything except a need to visit the gym: Pay attention to your surroundings. Stay away from anywhere dark & deserted. Pay attention to your feelings – if anyone or anywhere gives you a bad feeling, leave the area. Don’t leave something like a camera-bag or backpack unattended on a park bench while you wander off to take photos. Etc.

Katrina flooded about 80% of New Orleans with salt water, and the water stayed for almost a month. Much of the city is still struggling to recover and all you have to do to see devastation is drive around. It will take years for NOLA to fully recover from Katrina.

However, the parts of the city that tourists usually visit were not flooded. It’s not a coincidence – the French Quarter and other old parts of the city were built on relatively high ground and only suffered wind damage from Katrina. Almost all of the damage has been repaired and you have to look closely in the FQ to see that Katrina happened at all. You should visit and see for yourself.

If you drive or rent a car, put your car in a lot or garage and leave it there unless you are traveling away from downtown. You don’t need a car to get around in the French Quarter, Central Business District, or Warehouse District. Also, the parking regulations are Byzantine and there are lots of Parking Control Agents.

The regional transit authority (www.norta.com) sells 1 and 3 day passes that offer unlimited use of buses and streetcars for the day(s) you select.

There is always music, but the bands change: Go to www.bestofneworleans.com and click on Music then Listings or to www.offbeat.com and click on Listings, then Music.

Wander around the French Quarter, enjoy the architecture, watch the street entertainers (do tip), and visit some of the historic buildings that have been turned into museums. Most of them charge admission but some are free (go to www.frenchquarter.com and click on Historic Attractions).

Assuming the weather is good, you can collect a sandwich lunch and eat in the riverfront park (watch the shipping) or in Jackson Square (a very nice park).

The Riverwalk shopping center has an air-conditioned food court with dining overlooking the river (www.riverwalkmarketplace.com).

The lobby for the Wyndham Canal Place is on the 11th floor and overlooks the French Quarter. It is a great place for an afternoon drink/snack: http://www.wyndham.com/hotels/MSYCP/main.wnt

Cafe du Monde is in the French Quarter and you shouldn’t miss having cafe au lait & beignets (www.cafedumonde.com). Another great coffee shop is the Croissant d’Or (at 615 Ursulines Street), which is open from 7:00am to 2:00pm and has food other than pastry.

The Palm Court restaurant is very nice, has moderate prices, and traditional live jazz starting at 8:00pm: 1204 Decatur Street, tel 504-525-0200 (reservations are important and they are not open every day).

There is a free ferry across the Mississippi at the “foot” of Canal Street. It is a short trip but like a harbor cruise w/o a guide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canal_Street_Ferry

The Aquarium and Audubon Zoo are world-class attractions (www.auduboninstitute.org) and you should see them if you can. There is a shuttle boat (not free) between the Aquarium (which is next to the French Quarter) and the Zoo (which is several miles away). You can also drive to the Zoo (which has free parking) or take public transit from the French Quarter.

New Orleans is home to a number of other museums, such as the National World War II Museum (www.ddaymuseum.org) and the New Orleans Museum of Art (www.noma.org). Both can be reached by public transit: The WWII museum is in the central business district but a long walk from the French Quarter and NOMA is not within walking distance of downtown but has free parking if you choose to drive there.

Hope you have a good visit!

How do I tell if a painting is an original or a print?

Question by Fingerspinner: How do I tell if a painting is an original or a print?
I have been left what I was told (by the original purchaser) was an original painting (by Ben Maile). However I have now been told it is only a print. There is a considerable difference to the value and I need to be sure before selling it. Is there an easy way of telling the difference?

Best answer:

Answer by Yogi
If it is a PRINT is is FLAT and has No brushstrokes. It is a Piece of paper that is actually a picture of the original.

An original is usually on a canvas or board.

How could you not tell the difference?

Is Topps Triple Threads a Rip Off?

Question by Jonah K: Is Topps Triple Threads a Rip Off?
I was wondering if triple threads is a good hobby box. If not what is better

Best answer:

Answer by Jenn Brewers Girl
It’s definitely a good brand, it’s a higher end baseball hobby box, there are brands that are even better but cost even more yet (Exquisite, Ultimate for example-you could pay 0 for one pack) So, if you bought a box of Triple Threads which contains two packs for 0.00 you got a pretty fair deal. But boxes are tough, it’s not easy to make your money’s worth because you’d have to pull a pretty good card. They’re in there, but unfortunately the chances are that you are not going to pull a Ryan Howard autographed jersey card or your favorite player. When I buy boxes, I just buy them for fun-it’s the best way to look at it.

Art Nouveau….?

Question by lazydaisy: Art Nouveau….?
I can’t seem to figure out what sets Art Nouveau style from other art styles. It looks like just a bit of everything and I cant find a link b/w everything. Anybody know?

Best answer:

Answer by p over p
Art nouveau was the main artistic style for Europe for about ten years…if it seems difficult to set it apart from other art to your eye it might be because so many of its elements are still used today.
It was a style that was used in paintings as well as architecture and fashion.
One of its main features was the use of wavy shaped depictions of things like shells, insects, feathers, plants etc. into elements of the design. This doesn’t mean that all art using these elements are art nouveau or that all art nouveau used only these themes.
Many art nouveu artists painted women in (at the time) sexy or seductive poses. There is a sort of decadence to much art nouvea art.
You should really use some basic research skills and find a good book at the public library or Google Image and compare many examples of the time. Compare those to the art of the previous era the Victorian, and you will see similarities and differences which will help you understand it better. If not, maybe art isn’t your forte.
Now: Stand back for all the WIKIPEDIA cut and pasters who will surely bury you in too much information….

Is it safe to walk on a metal roof of a metal building?

Question by anim8er2: Is it safe to walk on a metal roof of a metal building?
I’m looking to buy a metal warehouse building. The walls and roof are dirty and need cleaning. While the structure is plenty sound, I’m wondering how safe it is to walk on the roof. I was wondering if all metal roofs are built strong enough to support a person walking on it.
For other types of roofs in colder climates, building codes specify a load capacity to hold up under snow. Here in Houston, such support does not apply. As the roof itself is very light, it doesn’t need to be very strong to shed off rain.

As long as you aren’t a fatty, you should be ok. I walk on mine all the time, just make sure to walk on the frame trusses and not the open panels. Much safer.
